Creating your first page

Set up a workspace for a subject, essay, or set of readings - the starting point for everything else in Paper.

A page is the container for everything related to one topic: its note, any sources you add, and any study materials Paper generates.

Create a page

  1. In the sidebar, hover over a section (Private or your workspace) and click the + button. The Create new page modal opens.
  2. Pick how you want to start:
    • New page - a blank Notion-style note; add sources to it later
    • Upload a file - PDF, Word, PowerPoint, text, EPUB, video, or audio. Drop in multiple files at once to attach the rest as linked sources.
    • Paste a link - toggle between YouTube and Website, then paste the URL. Playlists and channels open a preview where you pick which videos to import.
    • New canvas - spatial workspace with AI nodes
    • Flashcards - start with an empty spaced-repetition deck
    • New quiz - Kahoot-style quiz page
    • Import from Notion or Import from Outline - drop in a .zip export
  3. The page opens at /learn/[id]. Click the title at the top to rename it.

Organise pages

  • Drag pages in the sidebar to reorder them.
  • Nest pages by dragging one onto another - useful for grouping all the readings under a single subject.
  • Star important ones to keep them at the top.

Pages live in Private (only you) or your active workspace. You can move a page between sections from the share menu.

Add properties (optional)

Properties are custom fields that turn a parent page's children into a sortable database - a "Subject" select, a "Due date" date, a "Status" tag.

  1. Open a parent page and switch to the table or board view.
  2. Click + Add property and pick a type (text, select, date, number, person, URL, checkbox).
  3. Fill in values per page; sort or filter by any property.

See Properties & databases for more.

What to do next

  • Add a source: PDFs, YouTube & video, or web pages.
  • Open the AI features panel and try generating a summary.
